Notes from a Japanese Conservator
Japanese non-dissolving tissue for conservation and repair work

Japanese non-dissolving tissue (ND Tissue) is to paper what teflon is to bone folders. It is composed of 100% polyethelene terephthalate and has a very high wet strength as well as being heat resistant.

May be used as a support under fragile work: can paste out what paper to be repaired and the ND tissue won’t stick to the artwork because adhesive won’t stick to the ND tissue.

When removing material which is to be discarded from paper which is to be saved (acidic book board from a paper label, for example) you can work on a blotter (to absorb excess moisture) that has a layer of the ND Tissue on top of it, then pick away the moistened board to get at the label and then use the ND Tissue to lift the label from the blotter.

The ND Tissue can be used as a barrier in blotting excess moisture by sandwiching: blotter, ND Tissue, artifact, ND Tissue, blotter. This allows the blotter to soak up the moisture without sticking to the paper being blotted.

ND Tissue can be used as a barrier when brushing work in mounting, and as a barrier when pressing work with hands.

Because of its wet strength ND Tissue may be used as a support under work in a water bath.

Due to its resistance to heat the ND Tissue can be used as barrier when ironing paper.  (recognize that heating paper by ironing is not good practice andemphasize using low heat only)
