Konnyaku Starch Powderfor Transforming and Treating Japanese Washi Paper
Konnyaku is powdered Devil's Tongue root, a natural plant starch that, when mixed with water and applied by brush to Japanese paper, gives extra strength, waterproofing and memory to papers. Recipe card sent with purchase.
Konnyaku can be used to stiffen Japanese paper, but also can make washi (Japanese paper) very soft and chamois-like by continued kneading. Multiple applications of konnyaku can enhance the strength of the paper for kneading.
5g of konnyaku powder (approx one teaspoon) makes about a quart of material, which can be quite a lot when first starting our. Konnayaku once made up does not last more that a couple of days so you may want to start with a half batch.
See paper recommendations below. These are Japanese papers that have been tested over many years and are used in Washi Arts konnyaku and momigami workshops.
